ABSTRACT

According to the actual conditions of the port area, the model scale 1:100 was selected after considering the influence of various factors on the test precision and reliability.

3 MODEL PREPARATION

3.1 Preparation of hydraulic fill sand

The hydraulic fill was a sand-silty fine sand, which was collected from the site, and used to represent the sand sample in the present study. Owing to certain unavoidable mud content caused by the flow of tidal currents during the process of hydraulic fill, the sand sample used in the centrifuge tests did not fully represent the actual construction conditions. The water content of the original sand sample was measured. Then, the sample was air-dried, and the granulometric analysis was performed to determine the grain-size distribution of the sand sample. After adding the silt and clay fraction, the experimental sample met the engineering specifications (sand 85%; silt 10%; clay 5%). The grain-size distribution of the samples is shown in Figure 2. The gravel, with a grain-size of 4∼10 mm, was chosen as the material to represent the rockfill in model preparation.
