1 TACTILE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY

1.1 Overview

Grid based tactile sensor technology enables to measure stresses at a large number of points in close proximity, thus allowing for a realistic normal stress distribution. The sensors are made of two layers of polyester material and are about 0.3 mm thick. Consequently, the sensor can be viewed as non-intrusive with minimal effect of the measurement on the measured values. Initial applications of the technology for Geotechnical engineering were presented by Paikowsky & Hajduk (1997) and Paikowsky et. al. (2000).
