ABSTRACT

No advice currently exists in the geotechnical literature regarding the appropriate frame rate to capture dynamic events in geotechnical physical models. If the frame rate is too slow, the large time interval between PIV measurements of displacement will average out the measured velocity and acceleration signal. Even with low exposure times to eliminate blurring, large displacements would occur between successive frames if a low frame rate camera was used to capture a dynamic process. If a patch’s change in rotation or shape is too great between successive images, there is increased likelihood of PIV failing (White et al. 2003).
