ABSTRACT

The database of SMSE wall performance information includes results from full-scale field tests (Morrison et al. 2006), centrifuge modeling parametric studies (Woodruff 2003) and numerical analyses (Yang et al. 2007). However, this database still does not provide comprehensive information that can be used to understand the discrepancies between the behavior of SMSE walls and conventional MSE walls. Although the authors are currently developing a mechanics-based analysis to predict the deformations of SMSE walls, their analysis cannot be validated due to the lack of information on the internal strain distribution, wall face movements, and surcharge loading in the technical literature. Therefore, the goal of this study is to use geotechnical centrifuge modeling to extend the database of SMSE wall performance results and provide a basis for development of design guidelines for SMSE walls.
