ABSTRACT

The deposition of waste in landfill sites is the oldest, most widespread and universal method of their disposal. The collection of waste in landfills, even at properly designed and operated sites, can cause many environmental problems. One problem is the formation of leachates, as a result of water percolation through the dumped waste (Rosik-Dulewska 2002, Surmacz-Górska 2001). These can have a serious impact on the ground and groundwater, both in the immediate neighborhood of the landfill site and also further afield (Rosik-Dulewska 2002).
