ABSTRACT

Small water reservoirs, often referred to as ponds or shallow lakes, are one of the last wildlife refuges that have not been altered by man (Bajkiewicz-Grabowska & Mikulski 1996, Oertli et al, 2002, Søndergaard et al. 2005). They create valuable biocoenoses, increasing the biological diversity of agricultural and forested lands (Nicolet et al. 2002, Ruggiero et al. 2008). Additionally, in urbanised areas, they may significantly improve the living conditions for humans, beautifying the environment in which they live (Szulczewska & Kaftan, 1996, Vermonden et al., 2009). Small water bodies positively influence urban climate and are recreation spots for the local inhabitants who visit them to enjoy the beauties of nature (KrzymowskaKostrowicka 1997).
