ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The design and construction of the Cell 4A and 4B tailings disposal cells at the Denison Mines (USA) Corp. (DMC) White Mesa Mill facility in Blanding, Utah includes the use of a double liner system to contain process liquids and ultimately uranium/vanadium mill tailings waste materials. The double liner system is comprised of two high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes and a Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL). The effectiveness of the composite liner system was demonstrated through laboratory testing of the hydraulic conductivity properties of the GCL materials when permeated with very low pH liquids. In addition, a geosynthetic strip drainage material was used for the slimes drain installed overlying the primary geomembrane to provide drainage of the hydraulically placed tailings.
