Separation of a marking from some obscuring in˜uence has long preoccupied practitioners faced with processing a daunting scene or situation. Take, for instance, the matter of friction ridge or footwear imprints that can be identiŠed but not attributed to the event in question. •ere is frustration attached to the inability to discern the age of a marking.
