ABSTRACT

When he was seven years old, Leonhard walked with his father into Basel so that he could start school, having sent a trunk with his clothes ahead by carriage. It was an hour’s walk, and Leonhard was impatient-he was eager to see his grandmother, whom he hadn’t seen in more than a month, and now he was also going into the world and to school for the fi rst time. His life was suddenly full of changes. After a brief visit with his grandmother, Leonhard and his father went to the Latin School to register for classes, which would begin the next day.
