ABSTRACT

The fi eld of probiotics has never been stronger, as measured by numbers of publications on the topic and the growing number of products entering the marketplace. Still, nine years after the United Nations and World Health Organization landmark definition of probiotics “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefi t on the host” (22), this is a good time to refl ect on where the fi eld stands and the challenges and opportunities that lies ahead.
