ABSTRACT

The seismic risk can be described as a function of the following three factors: hazard, vulnerability and exposure:

• the hazard is the probability that an earthquake with a specific intensity will occur in a given area in a determined return time;

• the vulnerability is the propensity of a building or a facility to suffer damages because of its intrinsic physical and functional characteristics, when an earthquake occurs;

• the exposure represents the population, goods and activities which will be directly or indirectly struck by the earthquake.
