ABSTRACT
Blackberries (Rubus sp. L.), red raspberries (R. idaeus L. and R. strigosus Michx) and black raspberries (R. occidentalis L.) are grown in many areas of the world, but they are most productive in regions with mild winters and moderate summers. While generally referred to as “brambles” in the eastern US, they are generally known as “caneberries” in the western US. The European red raspberry (R. idaeus) and the American red raspberry (R. strigosus) are often combined by taxonomists into a single R. idaeus genus or considered separate subspecies of the same genus-R. idaeus subsp. idaeus and R. idaeus subsp. strigosus.
