ABSTRACT

Beyond the RNA world (see Chapters 10 and 11) lay proteins, small peptides, and thousands of non-proteinaceous plant natural products. These molecules have diverse roles in plant biology including cellular structure, signaling, transport, and metabolism, as well as pest defense and attraction of pollinators and foragers. Expression patterns of proteins and fl uxes of plant natural products in biological systems may not be refl ected accurately in transcriptional accumulation patterns for corresponding genes. In order to gain a more global picture of regulatory and metabolic networks in grapevine, it is important to consider proteomic and metabolomic approaches to complement transcriptomic analyses.
