INTRODUCTION

China has a population of 1.3075 billion and arable land of 1.218 million km2. Groundwater provides potable water for nearly 70% of China’s population and irrigation for some 40% of its agricultural land. China has been making rapid progress in economic growth for the past few decades. Groundwater has played an important role in promoting economic activities and serving domestic water demand, especially in the northern low-precipitation regions of China and in smaller towns and villages all over the country.
