ABSTRACT

Pursuing a preferable future may require a leader or agency to modify current personnel practices to ensure a workforce with the skills, predisposition, or motivation to embrace an alternative way of policing. Change initiatives will have to be enacted with the help, or despite the opposition, of current employees. ‚us futures-oriented leaders must consider both how present personnel practices will in¦uence the future and also whether current practices are adequate to meet the needs of their agency in light of the shi±ing nature of police work and police labor pools. Subsequent chapters will consider these and other organizational matters in the future of American policing.
