ABSTRACT

Prior to scene-overhaul, Mattie and her trainer/handler, Trooper First Class James Butterworth examined all entrances to the building for possible accelerants. With approximately six to twelve inches of debris on top of the concrete ¬oor, Mattie alerted in one area adjacent to an entrance door. This area was cleared and pour patterns were evident under the debris. She further alerted at the sill of the door. Samples were taken from these areas. Later that evening, a vehicle was seized from a suspect. Mattie searched the interior of the suspect’s car and alerted on the front passenger ¬oor mat. This alert was later corroborated by witnesses who stated that the suspect carried gasoline to the scene of the arson, storing it on the front passenger side ¬oor of his vehicle. The laboratory con rmed gasoline was present on the mat submitted as evidence.
