ABSTRACT

One of the most dangerous assignments that can be given to a police dog is apprehending a suspect.1 Dogs sometimes range beyond sight of their police handlers when directed to nd a ¬eeing or hiding suspect,2 and thus must deal with the suspect, though usually only for seconds, before being assisted by the handler. They may be shot or stabbed by the suspect in this time. Conversely, the handler may be attacked while the dog is still in the car and may have to come to the handler’s assistance, sometimes by being released from a special crate that the of cer opens with a remote device.3 Suspects have been known to use attack dogs to attempt to scare away police dogs.4 Sometimes dogs accompany police but are not deployed because a suspect becomes so violent that police have to resort to rearms.5
