ABSTRACT
During World War I, Red Cross workers used dogs to nd wounded soldiers on the battle eld. The dogs carried saddlebags with medical supplies and canteens of water and spirits. The dogs were trained to ignore the dead and not to bark so as not to draw enemy re. Some dogs were trained to take a wounded soldier’s helmet or cap and bring it to a stretcher station where bearers would follow the dog back to the man.3
