ABSTRACT

Adolescent Low Back pain (ALBP) will not kill its victims, nor does it represent an obvious immediate economic cost to the community. A recent review of the international ALBP prevalence literature (Milanese and Grimmer-Somers 2010) highlighted that prevalence rates varied significantly depending on the definition of ALBP used. Descriptions of ALBP in the literature can be divided into three main types:

1. General ALBP: any ALBP i.e. no restrictions placed on the reports of ALBP. 2. Chronic/recurrentALBP: characterised by ameasure of chronicity or recurrence. 3. Severe/disabling ALBP: characterised by a measure of severity i.e. effect on

activity.
