ABSTRACT
In a paper presented at the 60th Anniversary Conference of the Ergonomics Society, the author outlined the development of the systems approach to human factors and described its evolution into Human Factors Integration (Hamilton, 2009). It described the emergence of a systems concept with five underlying elements defined by Chapanis, Garner & Morgan (1949): personnel selection; personnel training; machine design; job design, and environmental design.
