Obstetrics derives from the Latin “ob” and “stare,” which mean to “stand by,” or “to stand near.” It refers to pregnancy and therefore involves the pregnant mother from conception to about 6 weeks postpartum, and the fetus. Gynecology derives from the Greek “gyne” and “logos,” meaning “study of women,” and refers to all things speci c to women’s health.
