ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will describe the role of informatics in radiation oncology (RO). We will begin with a brief history of the development of RO informatics. This history will be followed by a case study illustrating the information flow in a large, contemporary RO clinic. We will then present some of the standards used in RO informatics that are, in many cases, extensions of the corresponding standards in diagnostic imaging. Finally, we will conclude the chapter with some speculation about future developments in RO informatics.
