ABSTRACT

The INSTED innovative seismic resistant system and the initial experimental investigations carried out in NTUA formed the basis of the European project FUSEIS. The system, consisting of two closely spaced strong columns connected by dissipative fuses, is able to dissipate energy by means of inelastic deformations and combines ductility and architectural transparency with stiffness. Additionally, it offers the possibility of easy mounting and dismounting within the structure. In order to enhance the stiffness, strength and energy dissipation capacity of the system, several beams are provided within each storey. Current investigations aim to examine, numerically and experimentally, the progressive yielding of the fuses; which improves the behaviour of the frame under cyclic loading and as a result the response of the building during a seismic event.
