ABSTRACT

This study seeks to determine the structural reliability of steel buildings subjected to seismic loads. In recent years these often have been designed according to the AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design Method. The required strength is determined using load combinations that include seismic forces with an exceedance probability of 10% in 50 years. It is expected that unless these maximum conditions be exceeded neither strength nor serviceability limit state will be reached. Through this research a probabilistic analysis of both mechanical properties and loads of steel structures is made. With this information via Monte Carlo simulations the real structural reliability is determined.
