A specimen was fabricated by increasing the column length of a subassemblage specimen without the knee brace reinforcement used in existing tests (Fig. 2a) by 250 mm; another was formed by applying 45° knee brace reinforcement to a frame similar to the former in detail (Fig. 2b). 1 INTRODUCTION

The authors have been studying methods (Fig. 1a) for connecting an H-section steel column to an H-section steel beam via split tees using highstrength bolts without any welding to eliminate the use of horizontal stiffeners in mid-to low-rise steel buildings (Fig. 1a, Ebato et al., 2005, Harada et al., 2007).
