ABSTRACT
The search for unifying principles has been an integral part of the development of physical laws of nature. One of the most fruitful principles of this kind has been the so-called variational principle which has appeared in a number of different guises, most famously as the Principle of Least Action. In this article we will discuss some aspects of this principle, its applications in physics and some of the mathematics underlying it.
