ABSTRACT

Hermann Weyl, the mathematician of great renown of the last century was invited to give two lectures in 1945 in a course on European History and Civilisation titled “Universities and Science in Germany”, by the Princeton School of International Affairs. The text of these thoughtful lectures was published at the initiative of Prof. K Chandrasekharan, in India, in The Mathematics Student (Weyl, 1953), in 1953. It was indeed with great

foresight, that Chandrasekharan thought of publishing the text in India, since these lectures of Weyl contained many valuable insights into how a mathematician thinks – in particular the universality of the language of mathematics.
