In all the years of our friendship, we never spoke of our personal religious beliefs or practices, but I would infer that he would agree with the following assessment-and here I parallel the famous sentence of Edward Gibbonthat to liberal governments all religions are equally true, to philosophers they are equally false, and to scholars such as himself they are equally useful as grist for their descriptive and interpretive mills.
