ABSTRACT
A t this point in typing my story, I was interrupted by receiving an e-mes-sage from Moscow. I had been pursued by the head of one of the laboratories of the Russian Academy of Sciences who seriously questioned something I wrote in one of my SIAM News columns (i.e., in the newsletter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, October 1999).
