ABSTRACT
Between the years 1868 and 1871, “Boss” Tweed of Tammany Hall and his cronies managed to steal a reputed $45,000,000 from the city of New York. Figuring an infl ation rate of 1:10 at the very least, you can see that this was a very fi ne piece of cash indeed. One of the benefi ciaries of this plunder was a man by the name of Charles Edwin Wilbour. Wilbour was descended from an old Rhode Island family that had settled in Little Compton in the 1690s. He was a bright boy with an interest in languages. He entered Brown with the class of 1854 and won a prize in Greek.
