ABSTRACT

I fi rst met Neugebauer (1899-1990) in the fall of 1963 when I joined the faculty of Brown University. For many years, prior to his return to Princeton’s Institute of Advanced Studies in 1984, I ate lunch with him fairly oft en in the Brown cafeteria known as the Ivy Room. Not infrequently, we were joined by other members of the History of Mathematics Department or their visitors. Th e conversation was relaxed but lively, scholarly but usually very general, and was terminated when the last person had fi nished lunch. Neugebauer was not one to twiddle his spoon leisurely in a second cup of coff ee.
