ABSTRACT
I n 1965, Gerald Toomer, a brilliant clas-sicist from Oxford, joined the department. Toomer has published fundamental studies of Greek, Arabic, and medieval Latin mathematics and of mathematical astronomy. From his pen has come a commentary on Diocles’ Burning Mirrors and a translation and annotation of Ptolemy’s Almagest. His later interests have embraced the study of English Arabists in the 17th century and through this connection he has published Eastern Wisdom and Learning: Th e Study of Arabic in Seventeenth Century England as well as John Selden: A Life in Scholarship.
