ABSTRACT

The primary task of this chapter is to express the effective coupling properties of magnetoelectric (ME) composite in a convenient matrix formulation by using the successful Green’s function technique. This approach described the influence of the composite microstructure (e.g., phase volume fraction, phase connectivity, aspect ratio of the phase particles) on the effective properties of ME composites. In addition, the giant ME effect in composites containing Terfenol-D is predicted. In the ME nanostructures such as nanocomposite thin films, the ME coupling is still strain-mediated in most cases. The strain-mediated ME coupling in the nanostructures can also be modeled by the Green’s function technique. The physics-based approach for the ME composites remains to be further generalized to treat the dynamic ME behavior of these ME composites including bulk and nanostructures.
