ABSTRACT
So far, we have considered the basic mechanics and electrical activation of the heart and the remarkable properties of blood. We have also seen that the circulation consists of various classes of blood vessel, arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins. In this chapter, we will consider the characteristic blood £ow patterns in each of these, together with an examination of the special arrangements in the brain, the lungs, and the heart itself. Finally, the mechanisms of control of blood pressure (BP) and heart rate will be explained. Lastly, major diseases of the cardiovascular system and their treatment will be discussed.
