Sensation is an awareness or feeling of conditions on, surrounding or within the body. The traditional ‹ve senses of sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell are augmented in some animals with sensing of magnetic and electric ‹elds. In all of these classes of sensation there are specialized sensory receptors connected to sensory nerves involved. There are several principles that assist in setting the scene for understanding sensation which relate to the properties of the underlying structures and connections.
