ABSTRACT

Nanomaterial regulation in the United States is still very much in the

developmental stages. To date, there is no one national regulation

for nanomaterials. Instead, each lawmaking authority has individual

responsibility for chemicals or uses falling under their statutory

mandates. This means that individual federal agencies, states, and

local jurisdictions are in the process of developing nanomaterial

regulation for their specific areas of concern. While most federal

agencies, and several states, have begun the process of evaluating

nanomaterial regulation, nothing has developed into a permanent

set of controls or guidelines. This includes environmental pro-

tection, worker safety, cosmetics, insurance coverage, and related

concerns. The following discusses the regulatory efforts concerning

nanomaterials in the United States. Readers are urged to check cited

sources and newly formed resources on a regular basis as the area is

fast moving and likely to change in the near future.
