ABSTRACT

The word ‘angina’ is derived from the Greek word ‘ankhon’ which refers to a strangling sensation. Accordingly, it has been used to describe any symptom that is characterized as a strangling sensation such as ‘Ludwig angina’ where a strangling sensation in the throat is due to a soft tissue infection in the fl oor of the mouth. Thus the more specifi c term for the cardiac symptom is ‘angina pectoris’, where the term ‘pectoris’ is derived from Latin and refers to the chest.
