ABSTRACT

It is not uncommon for a well-meaning upper management representative to ask the question, “What will it take to make these problems go away?” e simple answer to this question is the following. If the repetitive manual work, the related ergonomic risk factors, and the people performing this work go away, so will the related medical cases and discomfort symptoms! Since this does not generally happen, the setting of unrealistic expectations has o–en led to the unfortunate end result of creative record keeping to create

the desired impression that the problems are under control. To prevent this occurrence, performance-oriented goals and objectives should be created rather than those geared to specic incidence rates or to complete elimination of problems. If all elements of a comprehensive ergonomics control program are in place, then improvements in the numbers will be realized in time.
