ABSTRACT

Requirements are the basis for system design. Œe successful planning, initiation, development, and maintenance of an information technology (IT) system hinge on solid requirements speci-‚cations. Œese system life-cycle activities are negatively impacted when requirements are not adequately analyzed. Inadequately de‚ned requirements lead to poor planning. System development activity may proceed in a direction contrary to user wishes or mission requirements when the planning is weak or the requirements are poorly de‚ned. Appropriate maintenance is diªcult to achieve when the timing and activities are not clearly identi‚ed and communicated. Proceeding down a path without regard to what is required is an invitation to failure. Likewise, security management also fails to deliver when a security requirements analysis is lacking.
