The term had been previously defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as follows: “any substance, other than a drug, or combination or substances, synthetic or natural in origin, which can be used for any period of time, as a whole or as a part of a system which treats, augments, or replaces any tissue, organs, or functions of the body.” The new definition became “a nonviable material used in a biomedical device intended to interact with biological systems.” Even today, this definition remains little changed [1].
