ABSTRACT

The high rate of failure of business intelligence (BI) or data warehouse projects combined with a growing demand for BI solutions is creating a major gap between supply and demand. Predicting the cost of a BI project that realizes a specific functionality has proven to be very difficult in practice. This is the reason why so many of these projects get into trouble. The best-known estimating method is Function Point Analysis, a method of objective- and technology-independent prediction of the size of an information system. A counting guideline for sizing data warehouses has been available since 2009. Function Point Analysis for BI can also be used to support project control, forecasting, productivity improvement, and benchmarking.
