ABSTRACT

In today’s challenging economic times, organizations need to make the most of their resources. Unfortunately, many improvement initiatives have been slashed. Even measurement staff and initiatives are being cut or underfunded. This is very disturbing because experience has proven that measurement enables performance improvement, resulting in lower costs. This has been demonstrated numerous times by organizations willing to measure productivity and implement improvements. This chapter documents eight case studies from different organizations that I have worked with over the years to demonstrate how software measurement can help companies achieve quantifiable goals, especially those of cutting costs. These examples can help organizations promote measurement and identify similar opportunities for improvement and cost cutting.
