ABSTRACT

Recovering evidence a—er the detonation of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) is the ultimate test of skill for a post-blast investigator. Debris can be scattered over an area covering in excess of 1500 m in diameter. ›e forces generated by the detonation of hundreds (or thousands) of kilos of explosives can nearly obliterate evidence. Despite these challenges, there have been several successful VBIED prosecutions in the United States and around the world. ›is chapter will cover all aspects of a VBIED investigation, from collecting post-blast evidence, to pursuing investigative leads, to conducting forensic examinations and presenting the evidence in court. To illustrate these topics, I will use examples from my two decades of investigating VBIEDs around the world.
