ABSTRACT

Portable explosive detection instruments ožer a number of signi‡cant advantages in the investigation of explosive-related incidents. Portable instruments for explosives analysis are most commonly used in three ‡eld situations: (1) post-blast examination, (2) identi‡cation of suspected explosive material (pre-blast analyses on bulk material), and (3) in the detection of hidden explosives. ›e detection of hidden explosives will not be covered in this chapter (this topic is covered in detail in Chapter 3). Equipment of this type can also be used in the laboratory to screen work areas, personnel, and equipment, and as an initial screening test for exhibits.
