ABSTRACT

Thus the mine which had originally been constructed solely for production purposes became the Morsleben repository for radioactive waste (ERAM). Pursuant to the German Atomic Energy Act (AtG) it must be guaranteed that the waste stored in a repository is safely sealed from the biosphere in the long term. With this objective in mind a sealing concept for the repository has been developed by the responsible applicant organisation-the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS)—which has been submitted for licensing to the licensing authority (Ministry for Agriculture and the Environment (MLU) of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt) (Preuss et al. 2002, Eilers et al. 2003).
