ABSTRACT
The generation of articial tissues and the creation of complex 3D structures of biological organs had, until recently, been a fanciful myth and a dream. In recent years, an extensive research in this eld has made this dream come true. Tissue engineering technology has now advanced to a stage where generation of new tissue to replace the damaged ones or, for that matter, growing articial organs for use in organ transplantation is now undergoing extensive clinical trials in many countries (Cima et al. 1991; Yang et al. 2001; Grifth and Naughton 2002; Vacanti 2003; Weinand et al. 2006; Marcacci et al. 2007; Iwasa et al. 2009).
