ABSTRACT

Archaeological Areas of Herculaneum, Pompei and Oplontis are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Nowadays, these ancient Roman Cities are an unique example of architectural design, decoration and paintings, lifestyle of the Early Roman Empire. When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August A.D. 79, it engulfed the three flourishing Roman towns of Pompei, Herculaneum and Oplontis, as well as the many wealthy villas in the area. The Herculaneum city was spread over by a flood of mud, ashes and eruptive materials dragged by following rain showers. The mud rushing stream penetrated all openings in private and public premises, filling up even the tiniest voids in rooms and furniture. In the time the mud and ashes consolidated into a solid and hard layer 15-20 meters thick.
