ABSTRACT

Abstract-It was investigated whether the anti-anxiety effects produced by benzodiazepine, diazepam, and a SSRI, fluvoxamine, treatments were related to the changes of intracerebral 5-HT and other catecholamine concentrations using SART-stressed rats. As a result, findings partially different from the previous reports were observed: (1) SART stress decreases the 5-HT concentration in the raphe nuclei region, diazepam partially induced recovery of the decrease, and fluvoxamine directly increases utilization of 5-HT without changing the 5-HT concentration; (2) diazepam and fluvoxamine caused recovery of the decreased DA concentration in the substantia nigra region and induce mental stability; and (3) SART stress increased the NE concentration in the region containing the ceruleus nucleus.
