ABSTRACT
X-rays have been used to produce medical images ever since their discovery by Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895 (see Chapter 1). In the United Kingdom, it has been estimated that there are 705 medical and dental radiographic examinations per 1000 population per year (Tanner et al. 2001), so that the technique is of major importance in medical imaging.
