ABSTRACT

In one way, cultural tourism is the raison d’être of our heritage institutions; yet in another way, it threatens their very existence. Our challenge is to get the right balance.

The concept of cultural tourism is new in Canada. Our knowledge of available products and the expectations of the international and domestic markets is somewhat limited. Research conducted by Tourism Canada clearly shows that our international visitors are no longer just interested in our magnifi cent landscapes, but also want to discover Canadian society with its different cultural manifestations.
